Top 10 Fall Movies - Part Two

With the Summer movie season now officially over it's time to look at some of the top movies that are coming out this Fall/Winter. There's a pretty big difference between the two season's as the summer tends to be heavy loaded with special FX and 3D while the movies later in the year tend to feature Meryl Streep and movies set in 19th century England. This is ok though most of the movies that are going to be released over the next three months will probably be front and center at the Academy Awards in the Spring.

Earlier in the year I did a list of the top Summer movies that I was looking forward to (here and here). This list isn't based on what I think will be tops at the box office or will win the most awards. It's just a list of the movies that I think will be the most entertaining and ones that you should keep your eye out for.

Here's the top 5 I'm most excited to see, to see picks 10-6 click here.
#5 - The Adventures of Tintin (December 23)
This will be Steven Spielberg’s second movie this fall (“Warhorse” being the other). He directs this CG feature which is based mostly on the Tintin book “The Secret of the Unicorn”. Even though Tintin is more popular overseas the impressive looking CG could win over audiences here in North America. If the movie ends up being a hit look for them to make more movies based on other Tintin books and will hopefully introduce more kids to the book series.

#4 - J. Edgar (November 9)
Directed by Clint Eastwood, this movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as legendary lawman J. Edgar Hoover. The movie covers his entire life with focus on his creation of the FBI and his investigations into the Kennedy’s and Martin Luther King Jr. With DiCaprio starring and Eastwood directing it’s safe to say that this movie will be a heavy favorite to win several Academy Awards.

#3 - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (December 21)
This is easily my favorite trailer this year. I love that it advertises that this is “the feel bad movie of Christmas”. Yes, it’s based on the blockbuster book but that’s not what I’m excited about. What I’m excited about and so should everyone else is that the movie is directed by David Fincher who has made such great films as “The Social Network”, “Fight Club”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, and “Se7en”. He could direct an episode of “Mike & Molly” and I would watch it.

#2 - Contagion (September 9)
The last of the September movies on this list. I admit that I’m a germ phobe. Tell me that someone has a cold or the flu and I’ll go throw on a hazmat suit. This movie has a similar feel to Steven Soderbergh’s other movies like “Traffic” where there’s several smaller stories all woven together. With all the big names like Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, and Jude Law this could be a huge hit. For me this looks like the scariest movie of the year.

#1 - Mission:Impossible Ghost Protocol (December 21)
It seems like the last few years people have started to turn their backs on Tom Cruise movies. “Knight & Day”, “Valkyrie”, and “Lions for Lambs” were all critical and financial disappointments. Cruise was great in “Tropic Thunder” and of course “Mission:Impossible III” was underrated. The fourth MI movie is directed by Brad Bird who directed the Pixar classic “The Incredibles”. This will be Bird’s first live action movie and based on the trailer it looks like he has the same great eye for live action as he did for animation. Jeremy Renner also stars as an agent who could very well take over the franchise from Cruise.
