Box Office Forecaster - 09/09/11

“The Help” ended up fending off another set of new releases last weekend to remain number one at the box office for the third week in a row. The last movie to be number one for three weeks was “Inception” back in 2007.

So far “The Help” has grossed over $128 million and could continue to play strong over the next few weeks as there are quite a few more male targeted movies opening up like this weekend’s “Warrior” and “Drive” starring Ryan Gosling. I had predicted that “Apollo 18” was going be the top movie last weekend which was obviously wrong but I think it’s safe to say that we’ll see a new number one movie after this weekend.  There's two great movies that I've already written about (here and here) opening that are getting great reviews and should hopefully be big hits.

Weekend Prediction - $4m
Gross to Date  - (Week 1)

Weekend Prediction - $5.2m
Gross to Date - $17m (Week 2)

Weekend Prediction - $12m
Gross to Date - $128.4m (Week 5)

Weekend Prediction - $12.5m
Gross to Date - (Week 1)

Weekend Prediction - $18m

Avoid Like the Plague
Was there any doubt that I was going to pick Bucky Larson this week? I like Nick Swardson, he's a funny comedian and he's had some great smaller roles in movies like "Grandma's Boy" and "Just Go With It" but this really looks terrible. It doesn't help that the TV spots for this movie are some of the most annoying commercials ever produced.

Best Bet
This movie is #2 on my list of the top fall movies. As I mentioned in that list as germ phobe I think this movie looks legitimately scary. It's been getting solid reviews so far and with it's all-star cast of Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Gwenyth Paltrow it should easily be the number one movie this weekend. By the way, what's with Gwenyth Palrow's face on that poster? I understand that she dies in the movie (they show it in the trailer..) but geez couldn't they find a better picture to use?

What are you seeing this weekend?
